Buy Local

What do farmer's markets, community gardens and the Buy Local movement have in common? They are all part of a sustainable community--and the triple bottom line of people, planet and profit.

Here is a snapshot of my work on these important issues:
Buy-local
Mayor Adams and I co-sponsored an ordinance requiring City bureaus to first buy local goods and services—and encouraging local consumers to do the same. When we buy local, more of each dollar stays in the local economy, creating local jobs.
Farmer’s Markets
The Bureau of Parks and Recreation is proud to host farmers markets throughout the city. They showcase Northwest agriculture, promote healthy eating, and build community.

The Portland Farmers Market operates at six sites throughout the city. Its market in the South Park blocks at PSU is ranked as one of the top farmer’s markets in the country!

Community Gardens
Portlanders love to garden. The urban agriculture movement offers great opportunities to feed the hungry, reduce our carbon footprint, and get your hands dirty!

Under the City’s Climate Action Plan, we are committed to adding 1000 new plots by 2012. Last week, the Parks Bureau opened community gardens number 33 and 34—at Vestal Elementary and Madison High School. Congratulations to the students, teachers and community partners!

I look forward to seeing everyone this season at the Portland Farmer’s Markets! Check out their website for official listings-- and see you there!
